New York, April 28, 2021 – Sutton Place Strategies (SPS) sponsored a webinar on Thursday, April 28th titled, Winning Strategies for a Deal Boom, moderated by David Toll of Private Equity Career Week.
CEO of SPS, Nadim Malik, spoke at the webinar joined by speakers Matt Diestel of QIC Global Private Capital, Tim Frend of HCI Equity Partners, and Patrick Hurley of MidMarket Capital Advisors as they discussed their tactics for increasing the quantity and quality of deal flow from most relevant deal sources, tapping new sources of deal flow such as independent sponsors, family offices, co-investment funds and SPACs, and the best approaches to special situations.
Malik discussed the state of the M&A market through the first quarter of 2021. Starting with the relative strength of M&A activity through Covid-19, where SPS has recorded an overall drop in M&A activity of approximately 10% in 2020. This is followed by a strong rebound in Q1 led by private equity firms, where sponsor acquisitions are up 22% year-over-year leading to one of the strongest quarters in recent memory. Alongside the increase in deals closed, the number of addons per buyout was significantly up from 2.07 to 2.41, median deal flow was up and has seemingly fully recovered from its Q2 2020 dip, and detailing sector-level activity including a market increase in distressed and special situations opportunities.
